Solar 2 Vehicle (S2V) explained: charging your EV straight from your roof

Solar 2 Vehicle — usually shortened to S2V — describes a home setup where rooftop generation is prioritised for charging an electric car rather than being exported straight to the grid. The hardware is familiar: panels, an inverter, and a smart EV charge point. What makes it S2V is the control logic that sits between them.

A solar-aware charge point measures the surplus flowing towards your meter and modulates the car's charge current to match it. When a cloud passes, the charge rate steps down; when the sun returns, it steps back up. Most chargers can also be set to a blended mode that tops up from the grid so the car still reaches a target state of charge by morning.

The practical limit is timing. Cars are often away during peak generation hours, so households that work from home, have a second vehicle, or can plug in at weekends tend to self-consume the most. A home battery widens that window by storing midday surplus for an evening charge, at additional cost.
